How VW Parts Are Structured
Volkswagen uses the same VAG part number system as Audi: a 10-character code where the first three characters identify the vehicle model/group. For example, 1K0 615 301 AA — 1K0 identifies Golf Mk5 generation components. This system means that if you identify your Golf Mk5 brake disc as 1K0 615 301 AA, the same part number is used across VW, Audi, SEAT, and Škoda variants built on the same platform.
VW Genuine, VW Original, and OES
Dealer-sold VW parts carry the VW logo and full OEM warranty. The same components are available as OES parts from Bosch, TRW, Febi Bilstein, ATE, Sachs, and other original VAG suppliers. For most common repairs, OES parts from these brands are the cost-effective choice without sacrificing quality.
Most Common VW Repairs and Parts
Golf Mk7 (2013–2020, 2.0 TDI): EGR valve failures, DPF (diesel particulate filter) issues, timing belt service. Always use genuine OEM timing belt kits — the 2.0 TDI is an interference engine and a failed timing belt means engine destruction.
Golf Mk6/Mk7 DSG: The DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG requires genuine OEM mechatronic unit service kits. Non-OEM parts cause shift quality issues and early failure.
Polo and Up: Three-cylinder 1.0 TSI engines — coil packs, spark plugs, and PCV valve are common wear items. OEM Bosch coil packs are significantly more reliable than aftermarket alternatives on these engines.
Passat and Tiguan: Haldex coupling service (4Motion variants) requires genuine OEM Haldex service kits — oil and filter — every 40,000 km. Aftermarket Haldex fluids are not recommended.
