Why Spark Plug Specification Matters More in a BMW
BMW's turbocharged and naturally aspirated petrol engines are tuned to tight tolerances. The spark plug heat range — the rate at which the plug tip dissipates heat — is specified precisely for each engine. A plug that runs too hot causes pre-ignition. A plug that runs too cold fouls with deposits. BMW specifies iridium fine-wire plugs across most of its modern petrol engine range, providing consistent ignition at high compression and boost pressures.
OEM Spark Plug Suppliers for BMW
BMW's primary OEM spark plug suppliers are NGK and Bosch. The BMW-branded plug in dealer packaging is made by one of these two companies to BMW's exact specification. Buying the correct NGK or Bosch plug with the BMW part number gives you the identical component.
The critical word is correct. NGK produces hundreds of spark plug variants. The OEM specification for a BMW N52 engine is different from the N54, which is different again from the S58. You must use the exact specification — identified by your VIN — not a generic NGK plug that "fits" the thread size.

Replacement Interval
BMW specifies 48,000–60,000 km intervals for iridium spark plugs on most engines, with some newer engines extending to 80,000 km. Copper-tipped plugs (used on older models) require replacement at 30,000 km. Do not extend the interval: worn plugs cause misfires, increased fuel consumption, rough idle, and in severe cases can cause catalytic converter damage.
